Abilene, Kansas
This massive Baldwin 4-6-2 steam locomotive, built in 1919, is powered up and ready roll down tracks toward Enterprise. It’s an incredible achievement. The engine was retired in 1955 and for over 40 years was a huge chunk of metal yard art in an Abilene. But heroic efforts brought her back to life and now she proudly serves the Abilene and Smokey Valley Railroad. Trips are scheduled one day per month, because of the high costs of running the engine. Also a conductor told me it’s so heavy that the railroad spikes need to be checked after a day’s run.
