This is a bug’s eye view of a small hay meadow in Lyon County, Kansas. Blackeyed susans, asters, prairie grass, and a bit of blue sky. Walking across the meadow one finds depressions where deer have slept, then is aware of life at every level – bugs, birds, beatles, bees… Hidden in the thickets are rabbits, possoms, raccoons.
For more information on the importance of these ecosystems, check the new booklet, Native Prairie Hay Meadows: A Landowner’s Management Guide, on the Kansas Biological Survey’s web site.
