About:
Over the last several years I have explored without a need for personal recognition or financial gain. That’s a great luxury, leaving me spiritually free to capture things in my own way. It’s completely a matter of the heart. I started this journey with an innate attraction to the natural beauty, and textures of Kansas. In that time I gained a deeper appreciation of the issues affecting rural communities, I’m gradually deepening my understanding of the history that formed or dissolved so many towns. The more I move through the small towns, the more I have the feeling of being a time traveler. I see how quickly things change, for better or worse. Traces of several generations are embossed in limestone walls, the rock-lined outline in the grass where a home once stood. Many of the scenes I photograph are completely gone by my next visit. The small towns seem static to outsiders, but they are in constant change, in a struggle to survive. Business fail, buildings are wiped away, people die. There are many of us traveling on the Kansas back roads, creating in photo, painting, or word, a record of our times. As documentary source, it’s difficult to know what value our work will hold in the future. These wide open, un-peopled horizons may eventually exist only in the stories we tell our children.
