I thought Council Grove was on fire last night. I was driving in from the west at 10 p.m., still five miles away looking toward the city, when I noticed the entire horizon was wrapped in flames. Prairie burns are common this time of year, but this was too bright, too big. As I entered the town I was relieved to see that the beautiful, historic downtown was peaceful, safe. It wasn’t until continued down the highway, to the east of town, that I saw the flames again. A huge section of grasslands, just beyond the stone barn, was being burned.

This prairie fire is a stunning photo. Thanks for putting it online for my viewing pleasure!
